Gel Coat Biomaterials CEO Shin Yoshida to Deliver a Lecture at the 106th Annual Meeting of the Chemical Society of Japan

Gel Coat Biomaterials, Inc. (Tokyo, Japan) announces that CEO Shin Yoshida will deliver a lecture at the 106th Annual Meeting of the Chemical Society of Japan, which will be held from March 17 to March 20, 2026.

In this lecture, Yoshida will introduce the company’s proprietary biomaterial technology “Gel Coat™ ”, a zwitterionic hydrogel platform designed to stabilize biomolecules such as enzymes, nucleic acids, and membrane proteins.

Biomolecules are widely recognized as promising functional materials for sustainable technologies due to their ability to catalyze highly selective reactions under mild conditions. However, their instability under environmental stresses—such as long-term storage and freeze–thaw cycles—remains a major challenge for industrial implementation.

Gel Coat™ technology addresses this challenge by forming a highly hydrated layer through zwitterionic polymers that mimic the molecular structure of cell membranes. This mechanism helps maintain the three-dimensional structure of biomolecules and suppress denaturation.

During the lecture, Yoshida will also discuss potential applications of the technology in both healthcare and environmental fields. In healthcare, the platform may contribute to the development of “Bio-Better” therapeutics, including stabilization of L-asparaginase used in the treatment of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). In addition, research on implantable biofuel cells and biosensors for long-term biological monitoring will be introduced.

In environmental and energy applications, the technology may enable new processes for immobilizing, recovering, and reusing enzymes such as cellulase used in bioethanol production, potentially reducing both manufacturing costs and environmental impact.
